Just be cognizant of your goals when perusing this book — that is, you probably want to learn kanji as opposed to the history of kanji– and orient your study accordingly. To find a kanji, you look it up by the readings in the back. All of the kanji are presented in an order that makes sense to me, there are plenty of details for each kanji, and easy to remember mnemonics for each.

The following information is provided for each kanji in Henshall’s guide: Sometimes I find the process of inventing the mnemnomic in itself is enough to stick a kanji or radical into long term memory, and I never actually need to recall it.

I reviewed it on here before, but I basically had the same conclusions you did. I use the app to learn how to write each kanji, and to study them.

Check to see if your question has been addressed before posting by searching or reading the wiki. Also, each kanji has a little paragraph about the kanji’s entymology that is helpful in seeing where the modern characters have come from. This technique is quicker, and doesn’t burden your memory with what is in fact non-essential information.

Henshall’s guide is a serious and thorough work of scholarship. A Guide to Remembering Japanese Characters: His style of breaking down each compound and component of each Kanji to kahji you remember kanjk meaning fits perfectly well with my own style of memorizing it! Other times I find that the one word definitions some compounds have are lacking and I have to write in a clearer definition myself out of my other dictionary.

Until i stumbled upon mnemonics I couldn’t retain even the simplest kanji, but with mnemonics I’ve been able to “easily” learn over This is text of such sort as dictionary-thesaurus-glossary-index so navigation in a user-friendly way the Kindle version could be much better, and more enriching.

It’s just awesome, you will love it! There is a further complication, even if you subscribe to the technique of limiting yourself to the mnemonics and a brief check of the explanation.

This is a reference book, so I have not read it cover to cover, but I use it every single day, and have done for almost a year now. Henshzll is not the full list of rules. The version I have of this book was pre-reform, and so is missing the or so kanji added in At the end of the paragraph there is a little neumonic device to help you remember the kanji, I find it harder to remember the device than to just remember the kanji, but they help some people I guess. Otherwise, you may find that you are actually memorizing a series of defunct kanji in order to remember a single modern kanji. But his has real history and research behind his method. Is it reasonable to love henzhall reference text like I love Henshall?

I’d assume that it would make learning vocabulary much easier if you had to memorize a word and saw that you knew its kanji already.
